Modern uPVC windows

Modern uPVC windows come down to a calm face, large panes and a dark colour. The profile decides most of it: square-edged or flush rather than bevelled. Every window opens inwards, as tilt and turn or side-hung, and is made to your size.

uPVC windows styles and designs

The Gealan S 9000 comes in versions with a different face. The Base slopes away at 15°, the Haax stands square and reads calmer, the Styl has a double bevel. On a modern house the square Haax gives the calmest face.

uPVC modern windows with a flush face

On the Schüco LivIng Vlak the opening part sits in one plane with the outer frame, for a flush face. On the K-vision Trend it sits back, so an opening window and a fixed one look almost alike from outside.

Slim and slimline uPVC windows

uPVC gets its stiffness from chambers and mass, so it can't go as slim as aluminium. Our uPVC frame and casement together show 119 mm on the Gealan S 9000, and from 99 mm on the Rehau Geneo, depending on the sash. If you want a sightline slimmer than that, you end up with aluminium.

Ultra slim uPVC windows

Ultra slim is not something uPVC does. What helps is less frame: a fixed light instead of an opening one, fewer divisions and larger panes. Concealed hinges keep the inside clean on a tilt and turn or side-hung window.

Colour on a modern window

Anthracite and black are the usual colours on modern houses, as a foil on the outside with white inside if you like. None of them needs painting.

You put the window together in the configurator: profile, layout, size, colour and glass. Then you request a made-to-measure quote, which arrives within three working days.

Flush uPVC windows: the Aluplast Ideal 4000

On the Ideal 4000 frame and sash finish in one plane, and the window needs no rebate. The frame is 70 mm deep with five chambers. Without a rebate it shows 65 mm around fixed glass and 114 mm with a tilt and turn sash; the 20 mm rebate makes that 84 and 133 mm.

The shallow frame suits a narrower reveal than the 120 mm profiles. Aluplast's system data put a whole window with Ug 1.0 glass at Uw 1.3 W/m²K. That is the maker's system figure; the Uw of your own window, with its size and layout, is in the quote.

Gealan S 9000 Slim: shallow, not narrow

In the Gealan range, Slim is about depth. The frame is 82.5 mm deep instead of 120, with the same 119 mm in view and the same Uf 1.10. Its flat face makes it the Gealan version for a clean elevation, and it sits less far into the wall.

Anthracite and black: which finish

Dark uPVC colours are foils, and the foils differ in surface. Anthracite AP40 has a woodgrain texture, AP60 a fine sand texture, and anthracite RAL 7016 is matt. For black there are jet black matt, black RAL 9005 smooth and graphite black RAL 9011 with a grain.

The configurator names the finish under each sample. Compare them there before you settle on one, and keep that one for every window of the house.

Large panes and fixed lights in uPVC

Fixed glass shows less frame than an opening sash: 65 mm on the Ideal 4000, 70 mm on the Schüco LivIng and 81 mm on the K-vision Trend. One wide fixed pane with a narrow tilt and turn beside it gives the most glass for the frame you look at. On the Gealan S 9000 a window can be up to 3,200 × 3,200 mm.

A fixed sash for an even face

Next to an opening window, plain fixed glass shows a narrower frame, and on a modern elevation that difference can look uneven. A fixed sash is the answer: a sash frame without hardware that matches the tilt and turn next to it and simply doesn't open.

Modern uPVC windows and Part L

Large panes put more weight on the glass. Triple glazing (HR+++) reaches Ug 0.6, double (HR++) Ug 1.1. In England a replacement window must reach 1.4 W/m²K or WER band B as a whole, frame and glass together, and your quote gives that figure for your window.

The work is notifiable. Your installer notifies it through a competent person scheme such as FENSA or Certass, or you tell building control in advance. Because we only supply, settle this with your installer before you order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which uPVC profile looks most modern?

A square or flush face: the Gealan S 9000 Haax, the Schüco LivIng Vlak or the K-vision Trend. Each profile page shows the cross-section, so you can compare.

Do you make outward-opening casements?

No. Our windows open inwards: tilt and turn, side-hung or bottom-hung tilt-in, next to fixed lights.

Can I have a large fixed pane with a smaller opening window?

Yes. Several panes side by side in one frame, fixed and opening, is a layout you build in the configurator.

What is the slimmest uPVC window you make?

By sightline, the Rehau Geneo, from 99 mm of frame and sash together. By depth, the Aluplast Ideal 4000, at 70 mm.

Is a flush uPVC window the same as a British flush casement?

No. A British flush casement opens outwards. Ours are flush on the outside but open inwards, as tilt and turn or side-hung.
