Bifold patio doors vs sliding doors
A bifold door — in the trade also called a folding sliding door — is made of leaves that are hinged to each other and fold to one side like a concertina. That is the difference from a sliding patio door, and it is the only difference that really matters: with a sliding door at least one leaf always stays in the opening, with a bifold none does. If you want the garden and the room to become one space, this is the type that does it. If you mostly want light and a view with an occasional way through, a sliding door does the same for less money and with fewer moving parts.
How many leaves does a bifold door have?
Sizing works differently here from what you may be used to, and that is down to the leaves. From the Aluprof manufacturer's brochure (edition NL-06.2022) for the MB-86 Fold Line HD: a leaf is 700 to 1,200 mm wide and goes up to 3,000 mm high, weighs at most 120 kg, and up to eight can be joined. So don't think in one width but in leaves: how many fit, how wide you want them, and which side they fold to. What those figures mean together for your opening is a question for the manufacturer and not for us: what the manufacturer confirms for your opening is in the offer.
Why bifold doors are priced per leaf
That leaf principle is in the price too, and it surprises people coming from windows. A window or a sliding door is priced per square metre; a bifold is priced per leaf. So two units with the same opening don't cost the same if one has four leaves and the other six — for the same area, the six-leaf door is the more expensive. If you want to come out cheaper, the question is not "how many metres" but "how many parts", and wide leaves cost less per running metre than narrow ones. The upper limit of 1,200 mm per leaf puts a brake on that straight away.
Opening in or out, and corner configurations
Two things the brochure does fix, and they decide your layout. The MB-86 Fold Line HD opens inwards and outwards: outwards keeps your floor space clear but needs room on the patio, inwards is exactly the other way round, and with six or eight leaves that is half a room of difference. And corner and panoramic configurations are possible, so two walls meeting at a corner can both open. With three chambers, 86 mm frame depth and 77 mm leaf depth, the profile is a relative of the Aluprof MB-86N we already supply: it shares the profile connectors, the seals and the accessories.
No guide price yet: how to get one
And then the honest part about the price. For a bifold we don't have a guide price yet: it comes from our own quote history, and there are no bifolds in it yet. What you can do: put one together in the configurator and send it as a request; the manufacturer prices it on your sizes and within three working days you hear from us — if it takes longer, you hear that within the same three working days. We supply two bifold profiles, the Aluprof MB-86 Fold Line HD and the Reynaers ConceptFolding 77; for the CF 77 Reynaers gives a Uf of 1.66 W/m²K, for the Fold Line HD we don't yet have that figure from the manufacturer, and a made-up number is worse than an empty field.
Folding sliding doors
Bifold doors, folding sliding doors or concertina doors are names for the same thing: panels hinged together that slide and fold to one side in a track. We supply them in aluminium, with the Aluprof MB-86 Fold Line HD and the Reynaers ConceptFolding 77.
External bifold doors: glazed, for outside
Our bifold doors are glazed external doors: each panel is an aluminium frame with insulating glass, made for the outside wall and not for inside. You choose the glass in the configurator.
Black bifold doors
Black bifold doors are possible: the aluminium is powder coated in a RAL colour of your choice, so black or anthracite too. You choose the colour in the configurator.
