Fitting bifold doors

Fitting bifold doors is work for your own installer or builder: we make the door to your size and deliver it, and nobody from Rovenzia comes to fit it. This page explains what the fitting involves, so you can settle it before you order.

Bifold doors supply and fit: who does what

We make the door and deliver it. Your installer checks the opening, gives you the size, takes out the old door or window and fits the new door. Find the installer before you order, not after.

Bifold doors installation: lintel, frame and track

The leaves hang from or run on a track, and the stack of folded leaves bears on the frame at one side. So the lintel must not deflect, and the frame must be firmly anchored on the side where the leaves gather. The manufacturer's installation instructions take precedence.

Aluminium bifold doors installation: the adjustment

With bifold doors, the adjustment of the hardware decides whether the leaves run smoothly. So preferably have them fitted by a builder or an installer, not as a first DIY job.

The threshold

A surface-mounted threshold with a rebate seal fits most existing floors. A low threshold, 3.5 mm above the floor on the Fold Line HD, needs drainage on both sides that is already there or still has to be made. Measure the floor build-up before you order.

Bi-fold doors for a new build

In a new build, fix the threshold and the drainage in the design from the start, and the lintel over the full width with your builder or structural engineer.

Corner bi-fold doors installation

The Fold Line HD comes in corner and panoramic configurations, where two walls meeting at a corner both open. How the structure above the corner is carried is a question for your builder or structural engineer before you order.

Building Regulations

In England and Wales, replacing a door can be notifiable building work. Where it is, an installer registered with a competent person scheme, such as FENSA or Certass, notifies it, or you notify building control before work starts. Because we don't install, your installer arranges this. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.

What the installer needs from your order

For England, Approved Document L looks at the whole door: a replacement door that is more than 60% glass has to reach a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or DSER band C, any other door 1.4 W/m²K or band D, and the new door may not perform worse than the one it replaces. The U-value of your door at your size and with your glass is stated in the offer. Give your installer that figure; the Uf and Ug on our pages are the frame and the glass on their own and are not the number they notify.

Settle the fold side and the handles first

Seen from inside, the leaves fold towards the side you choose and the traffic door sits on the other side. You make that choice in the configurator and the door is made to it, so walk it through with your installer against the room, the patio and any downpipe or wall light beside the opening. The same goes for the handle: if the traffic door has to open from outside as well, it needs the through handle set, and that too is ordered with the door.

The size we make, and the tolerance

We make the door to the overall size you enter, within ±2 mm up to 1 m and ±3 mm above that, and the diagonals within 1 mm up to 1 m and 2 mm above. The door is measured and the result recorded before it leaves. If it turns out to be outside those tolerances, we make it again to the size you ordered; we don't adjust it on site. So the size you enter has to be the one your installer wants.

Planning the installer's date

Production takes 6 to 8 weeks after you accept the offer. Delivery to the UK is quoted with that offer, so fix the installer's date once you have it rather than on a guess. Leave the old door in until the new one is on site, so the opening isn't standing open while you wait.

Taking delivery

Until the door is in your hands, damage in transit is our risk. Look the parts over with the driver before you sign, and if anything is damaged, have it written on the consignment note and take photos. Visible damage you only find when unpacking has to be reported within two working days of delivery, with photos of the damage, the packaging and the label, to schade@rovenzia.com.

Between delivery and fitting

Once the check is done, damage from storage, moving the parts around or the building work is no longer transit damage. Decide beforehand where the parts will stand until they are fitted, out of the way of other trades, and try to keep the time between delivery and fitting short. A fault you could not see at delivery, such as hardware that starts to stick, falls under your statutory rights, not under the two days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How are bifold doors installed?

The frame is fixed into the opening and anchored firmly on the side where the leaves gather, under a lintel that doesn't deflect. Then the leaves are hung, the hardware adjusted and the threshold finished, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Are bifold doors easy to install?

Less easy than an ordinary door: every leaf joint has its own hinges and locking points, and the adjustment decides whether they fold smoothly. Preferably have them fitted by a builder or an installer.

Can you cut bifold doors to fit the width?

Not our doors: they are made to measure, to the size you enter. Measure the opening in several places before you order, or have your installer do it.

How do the doors arrive?

In several parts, with the delivery quoted in your offer. Make sure someone is there to receive them and that there is room to set the parts down. Check them with the driver and have any damage noted on the delivery note.

Who notifies the work under Building Regulations?

Not us, because we don't fit. In England and Wales an installer in a competent person scheme such as FENSA or Certass does it; if yours isn't in one, you apply to building control before the work starts. Ask about this when you choose the installer.

What if the door isn't the size I ordered?

If the overall size or the difference between the diagonals is outside our size guarantee, we make the door again free of charge. We don't repair on site and don't offer a discount instead.

Can my installer fit the leaves to fold the other way?

Don't count on it. The fold side and the position of the traffic door are part of the order the door is made to, so check them against the room before you send your request.
