Composite front doors supply and fit

Most people searching for a replacement front door want it supplied and fitted. We do the first half: the door, made to your size and delivered to your address. Nobody from Rovenzia comes to fit it. This page explains how replacement works with your own fitter.

uPVC front doors supplied and fitted: who does what

We make the door, check its size before dispatch and deliver it. Your fitter takes out the old door, fits the new one and makes good around it. If you don't have a fitter yet, find one before you order: they give you the size and check the opening.

Replacement uPVC doors: door and frame together

A replacement door comes with its own frame, threshold and hardware as one unit. The old door and frame come out together; we don't supply a leaf to hang in an existing frame.

Composite front doors fitted: building regulations

In England and Wales, replacing an external door can be notifiable building work, depending among other things on how much of the door is glass. Where it is, an installer registered with a competent person scheme notifies it, or you notify building control beforehand. Because we don't install, that is for your fitter to check and arrange; ask about it when you get their price.

Fitting uPVC doors yourself

You can fit the door yourself if you have done it before: level and pack the frame, fix it to the wall, seal it and finish the threshold. Where notification applies, it applies to you too when you do the work yourself.

uPVC doors installation: the delivery

The door arrives with the delivery quoted in your offer. Check it yourself when it arrives and report any transport damage straight away, on delivery. Store it upright and dry until the fitter comes.

Measuring for a replacement door

Measure the width of the opening at the top, middle and bottom, the height on both sides, and keep the smallest figure each time. Take off the fitting gap your fitter wants: the result is the outside size of the frame, the size you enter.

A plan in five steps

Start by measuring and putting the door together in the configurator: design, colour, glass, handle and threshold. Then request your quote. You'll hear from us within three working days; if it takes longer, we'll tell you within that same time. Production takes 6 to 8 weeks after you accept. Delivery to the UK is quoted with your offer.

During those weeks you arrange the fitting with your own fitter. Don't plan the fitting for the day of delivery itself: that gives you time to look the unit over, and leaves room if the weather is against you.

The day of delivery

Delivery to the UK is quoted with your offer. When the door arrives, check the unit with the driver before you sign. If you see damage, have it written on the consignment note and take photos. Anything you only find when unpacking, report within two working days of delivery.

After that, store the door upright and dry, somewhere it cannot fall over. Leave the packaging around the frame until it is fitted; it protects the foil from scratches.

Taking the old door out

First the door comes off its hinges, then the old frame is freed from the wall. It is often fixed with nails, screws or anchors, with sealant or foam all round. An old timber frame is sometimes sawn into pieces to spare the wall and the floor. Once the frame is out, check that the bottom of the opening is level and dry; a rotten sill or an uneven floor is dealt with before the new unit goes in.

Setting, fixing and sealing

The new frame is set on packers, levelled and squared, and then fixed to the wall. Before it is fixed, check that the door swings freely and closes properly into the lock; a frame that is a few millimetres out of square will make the door stick later.

On the outside the joint has to be watertight, on the inside airtight. Insulation goes between the frame and the wall, and the joint is finished on both sides. Whoever fits the door chooses the materials that suit your wall.

Finishing inside

After fitting, there is a gap on the inside between the frame and the wall. It is finished with an architrave, plaster or a bead of sealant, depending on how the rest of the hall looks. Allow for some painting or plastering if the new door is a different size or thickness from the old one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to replace a front door?

Taking out the old door and fitting the new one is usually a day's work for an experienced fitter, finishing included. Making the door takes longer; the lead time is in your offer.

Can I replace a front door myself?

Yes, if you have the experience. The door comes as one unit with its frame, so there is no hanging or adjusting of a separate leaf, but the fixing and sealing must be right.

What happens to my old front door?

You or your fitter take it out and dispose of it; we don't take old doors away. Ask your fitter, or your local recycling centre.

Can I manage a few days without a front door?

Better not. Plan taking out the old door and fitting the new one for the same day, so your house is closed again by the evening. The new unit has then already been delivered and is ready.

Do I need permission to replace my front door?

That depends on your home and your local authority. For a listed building, in a conservation area, or in a flat where the freeholder or management company has a say, you may need consent. Check before you order.

What if the door sticks after fitting?

Usually the frame is then not quite square or level. Ask whoever fitted it to check it. If something is wrong with the door itself, tell us.

Do I need to be at home when the door is delivered?

Yes, or someone you name. Someone has to check the unit with the driver and sign, and have any damage written on the consignment note straight away.

Can I leave the old door in until the new one arrives?

That is actually the sensible thing to do. Only have the old door taken out on the day the new one goes in, so your house is never left open.
