French vs patio doors
French doors vs patio doors? In short: for a wide opening and a large glazed area, a sliding patio door, up to 6,500 mm; for an opening of a couple of metres that has to open completely, French doors.
The opening
French doors both swing away, so nothing is left in the opening. With a sliding patio door one panel always stays: you open half, or a bit more with three or four panes.
Width and space
French doors start at 1,200 mm and are limited to the width of two door leaves. A sliding patio door goes up to 6,500 mm and doesn't swing into the room or onto the patio, so you keep the space clear.
Wind and use
An open door catches the wind and can slam; plan for door stays. A sliding patio door doesn't have that, but needs a lintel and a floor that takes its depth.
Price difference
Per unit a sliding patio door costs more, because it's larger and has lift and slide hardware and a track. Compare on your size with the calculator on the two price pages.
