Cost of triple glazing and frame per m²

We have no fixed price per m²: it depends on the window, size, profile and colour. What windows cost with us is on the price pages for uPVC and aluminium windows; triple glazing comes on top.

Triple glazing price

In the quote you'll see what triple glazing costs for your windows against double, if you have both priced.

Triple glazing and Building Regulations

A replacement window in England needs a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or a WER band B. Triple glazing helps reach a lower figure; the U-value of your window is in the quote.

Weight of triple glazing per m²

Triple glazing is heavier than double, as there's a third pane. On large sashes that can set the maximum size; the limits per profile are on the profile page.

What's inside a triple glazed unit

A triple glazed unit is three panes of glass with two cavities between them, filled with an inert gas. The panes have a thin coating that reflects heat back inside. Our triple glazing has a Ug of 0.6 W/m²K; our HR++ double glazing is 1.1. That almost halves the heat lost through the glass.

Worked example: comparing double and triple

Say your windows have ten square metres of glass between them. Have them priced once with double and once with triple glazing: the difference between the two in your quote is what triple costs you. Set that against what the glass does, a Ug of 0.6 instead of 1.1. Part L in England looks at the whole window rather than the glass (1.4 W/m²K for a replacement window); the U-value of each window is in your quote.

Triple in obscure or safety glass

Triple doesn't only come clear. Obscure triple glazing lets light in without being overlooked, for a bathroom or a window facing the street. Safety glass triple is laminated glass class P4A, which doesn't fall out in shards if it breaks. Both have the same Ug of 0.6 as clear triple glazing, so you don't give up insulation for privacy or safety.

Where triple glazing pays off most

Triple pays off most on large areas of glass, such as a sliding patio door or a floor-to-ceiling window, and on the north side, where the sun adds little in winter. In a house that is otherwise well insulated and heated by a heat pump, every bit less heat loss counts. On a small toilet window the difference in pounds a year is small.

Choosing triple in the configurator

In the glass step you make two choices. First the type: double or triple. Then the finish: clear, obscure (satin) or laminated. That way you can combine triple with obscure glass in the bathroom and laminated glass next to the front door, and plain clear triple in the rest of the house.

What triple does to the U-value of the whole window

The Ug is about the glass alone. The U-value of the complete window (Uw) goes down with triple glazing too, but less sharply, because the profile around it stays the same. The larger the glass area compared with the profile, the more the glass sets the Uw, and so the more difference triple makes.

Triple glazing in a door or sliding patio door

A front door often has only a narrow strip of glass, and then the glass does little for the insulation of the whole door. In a sliding patio door it's the other way round: most of the element is glass, and the choice between double and triple decides almost everything. So people having a patio door several metres wide made choose triple more often than people who are only replacing a door. With a sliding door, do bear in mind that the sliding parts get heavier.

Triple glazing and your heating

A heat pump works best in a house that loses little heat, with a low flow temperature. Windows are often the weakest point of the building envelope. If you are switching to a heat pump within a few years, take that into account now: you don't replace windows every year, and the glass you choose today will still be there then.

Thicker and heavier than double glazing

A triple glazed unit is 12 to 16 mm thicker than HR++ and weighs 30 to 36 kg per square metre. Double glazing weighs 20 to 24 kg. The profile has to take that thickness and the hardware has to carry that weight. You notice the weight when fitting: a large element with triple glazing is not something you lift on your own.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does triple glazing cost per m²?

We don't sell glass per m²: triple glazing is in the price of the window. The quote gives the price for your windows with triple glazing.

How much do triple glazed windows cost?

More than double glazed ones. The difference for your windows is in the quote, in GBP excl. VAT and import duties.

How much do triple glazed aluminium windows cost per m²?

We price the whole window, not the glass per m². Our aluminium windows price page shows what windows cost per m² with us.

Can I buy triple glazing from you on its own?

No, we only supply glass in a new window. For new glass only in an existing frame, go to a glazier.

Is fitting included?

No. We supply, we don't install. Delivery to the UK is quoted with your offer.

Is triple glazing always better than double?

For insulation, yes: 0.6 against 1.1. Whether it's worth the extra cost depends on your windows and which way they face. Have both priced in the quote and compare.

Does triple glazing keep out more noise?

Not by itself. You keep out noise with panes of different thickness and with laminated glass. The number of panes makes little difference to that.
