Black bifold doors
Black bifold doors are aluminium with a RAL powder coat, like every bifold door we supply. Anthracite, grey and white are the other usual choices; you pick the colour in the configurator and it goes into your made-to-measure quote.
Black bifold doors for the outside wall
Black comes as RAL 9005 jet black or RAL 7021 black grey. A black frame stands out most on a light brick or rendered wall and frames the view into the garden.
Anthracite grey aluminium bifold doors
RAL 7016 anthracite grey is softer than black and goes with both dark and white window frames. It also comes as RAL 7016 smooth.
Grey bifold doors
For a lighter grey there is RAL 7039 quartz grey, RAL 9007 grey aluminium or RAL 9006 white aluminium.
White aluminium bifold doors
White comes as RAL 9010 pure white or RAL 9016 traffic white. White bifold doors stay quiet next to white windows and make the frame look lighter from inside.
Coloured bifold doors
Because the aluminium is powder coated, other RAL colours are possible too, such as RAL 6009 fir green, RAL 3005 wine red, RAL 5011 steel blue or RAL 8019 grey brown. Under each colour the configurator says whether the finish is smooth or textured, and which colours the profile you chose takes.
Your own RAL colour
The colours listed in the configurator are the ones chosen most often, not the whole range. If you already have a RAL number, from your architect, from windows elsewhere on the house or from a colour card, you can type it in: any colour in the RAL Classic range is possible on our aluminium. The configurator checks the number, tells you if it isn't a Classic colour, and points it out if it is already in the list.
That is useful when the bifold door has to match something that is already there, such as the frames of a roof lantern or the aluminium windows at the front. Give the exact number rather than a description: two greys that look the same on a phone can be several RAL numbers apart.
Gloss, matt or textured
With a RAL colour you also choose the finish, and there are three. Gloss is smooth and shiny. Matt is smooth without the shine. Textured is a coating you can feel, slightly rough to the touch. The same RAL number in gloss and in textured is the same colour with a different surface, and it reads differently on the wall because of it.
On a bifold door you handle the leaves every time you fold them. A textured finish shows fingerprints and small scratches less than a smooth one, which is worth weighing on a dark colour in particular.
Anodised-effect bifold doors
The aluminium list also has an anodised effect, a coating with the look of anodised metal rather than a flat colour. In the configurator it counts as a textured finish.
A different colour inside and outside
The configurator asks for the outside colour, the side you see from the garden, and the inside colour, the side you see from the room, as two separate choices. Pick 'Same as outside' if you want one colour throughout. Whether your bifold profile takes two different colours is decided in that step: if a combination isn't available on the profile you chose, the configurator says so instead of accepting it.
Handles and hardware
On a bifold door the handle sits on the leaf that opens first. The other leaves have a recessed flush pull on the outside, because a handle that stuck out would be caught between two leaves as they fold. So there is less hardware in view than the number of leaves suggests. Where the configurator offers a hardware colour, it is a choice of its own, grey, white, cream or silver, and it doesn't have to follow the frame.
Seeing the colour before you order
A colour on a screen is not the colour on your wall. We offer a sample set so you can look at it in your own light, against your brick or render and next to your window frames, in the morning and in the evening. A bifold door is one of the largest surfaces at the back of a house, and a made-to-measure door can't be sent back if the colour turns out wrong, so that check comes before the order.
Frequently asked questions
What colour bifold doors should I get?
Start from your windows. If they are white, white or anthracite bifold doors keep the back of the house calm; black gives more contrast. On a south-facing wall, a dark frame gets warmer in the sun than a light one.
Do you make uPVC bifold doors in colours?
No, we only supply aluminium bifold doors. The colour is a powder coat, so any RAL colour the configurator shows is possible.
Does black cost more than white?
On screen no colour costs more than another. What your colour costs is in your made-to-measure quote.
What is RAL 7016 smooth?
RAL 7016 anthracite grey with a smooth surface. It sits in the list next to RAL 7016 anthracite grey; compare the finish shown under the two options before you choose between them.
Which finish is best for bifold doors?
There isn't one best finish. Textured hides fingerprints and small marks better; gloss and matt are smooth and differ only in how much they shine. Choose by how the door will be used and how it should look.
Can I match my bifold doors to my other aluminium windows?
Yes, if you know their RAL number and finish. Enter the number in the configurator and choose the same finish; a sample next to the existing frame shows whether they match.
