Narrow French doors
Narrow French doors start at 1,200 mm wide with us, because the narrowest door leaf is 600 mm. The tallest leaf is 2,500 mm. Between those limits we make the doors to the millimetre, so there is no stock size to fit around.
1200mm French doors
1,200 mm is the narrowest pair we make: two leaves of 600 mm in one frame. Narrower than that, a single door is the answer rather than French doors.
Small French doors: 4ft and 5ft
We work in millimetres. 4ft is 1,219 mm, just above our minimum; 5ft is 1,524 mm. Enter the exact outside size of the frame and the configurator splits it equally between the two leaves.
uPVC French doors 1800 x 2100
1,800 × 2,100 mm sits well within the limits, as does 1,800 mm at the full 2,200 mm height. Our French doors layout has a standard size of 1,600 × 2,200 mm; you change it to your own size.
Wide and large French doors
Two leaves stop at roughly 2,000 mm. For a wider opening, add fixed side panels, which can be as narrow as 180 mm, or look at a sliding patio door, which goes up to 6,500 mm.
Measuring for French doors
Measure the opening at three widths and three heights and keep the smallest figure. Take off the fitting gap your installer wants: the result is the outside size of the frame, the size you enter.
6ft French doors
6ft works out at 1,829 mm. As a pair, that is two leaves of about 915 mm each, comfortably inside what we make. Enter the width of your own frame rather than the rounded feet figure: we build to the number you type in, not to a nominal 6ft.
French door height and the threshold
Our doors go up to 2,500 mm high. If the opening is taller, say so in the notes when you request a quote, and we look at what can sit above the doors.
At the bottom, the threshold is chosen in the configurator: 55 or 35 mm high, in black or grey. Which height works depends on the floor inside and the step or patio outside, so let your installer decide before you order.
Measuring French doors: a worked example
Say the opening measures 1,655 mm across at the top, 1,648 mm in the middle and 1,650 mm at the bottom. You work from 1,648. If your installer wants 10 mm free at each side, the frame you order is 1,628 mm wide, and the configurator divides that equally between the two leaves.
Height goes the same way: measure on the left, in the middle and on the right, and start from the lowest reading. The 10 mm is only there to make the sum work; the real gap is whatever your installer asks for.
Room for the leaves to swing
Each leaf sweeps through roughly half the width of the frame. On our standard pair of 1,600 mm, that is about 800 mm on each side of the centre, inside or outside depending on which way the doors open. Check what stands in that arc: a radiator, a kitchen unit, a step down, a row of planters. The opening direction goes in the notes with your quote request.
Sizes with side panels
A side panel starts at 180 mm, so the narrowest set with a panel on each side is 1,560 mm: 1,200 mm of doors plus two panels. Doors and panels share one frame and one profile, which keeps the sightline the same across the whole set. You enter the overall width as a single figure.
How exactly the doors are made
Anything over a metre wide is made to within ±3 mm, which covers every pair of French doors; narrower parts to ±2 mm. The two diagonals may differ by 1 or 2 mm at most. Each unit is measured before it leaves, and that measurement sheet comes with your order confirmation.
If the doors fall outside those limits, we remake them to your size free of charge. If the figure you gave us was wrong, we offer a remake at cost price.
Frequently asked questions
How wide are French doors?
With us from 1,200 mm, because the narrowest leaf is 600 mm, to roughly 2,000 mm for two leaves. Every pair is made to the width you enter.
How wide are standard French doors?
We make to measure, so any width from 1,200 mm. The standard size of our layout is 1,600 × 2,200 mm, two leaves of 800 mm, which you change to your opening.
How wide can French doors be?
As wide as two leaves allow, roughly 2,000 mm. Wider becomes a set with side panels, or a sliding patio door up to 6,500 mm.
How tall are French doors?
Up to 2,500 mm. That is a manufacturing limit for a door leaf, whatever the material; a taller leaf gets too heavy for the hinges.
What size are 6ft French doors?
6ft is 1,829 mm. There is no fixed 6ft size with us: you enter the exact width of the frame, a little over or under 1,829 mm if that is what your opening needs, and the doors are made to it.
Can French doors be taller than 2,500 mm?
The doors themselves can't. For a taller opening, mention it in the notes with your request; we then look at what can go above the doors, such as a fanlight.
Do I measure the old doors or the opening?
The opening. What you order is the outside size of the new frame, and neither the old leaves nor the old frame give you that figure directly. If the old frame is still in and you can't see the opening, ask your installer to take the size.
