Why a fixed window with top light in VEKA Softline 82 MD?
Softline 82 MD is the deepest VEKA profile we offer: 82 mm frame depth, seven chambers in the outer frame and six in the sash, and a Uf of 1.0 W/m²K. VEKA intends it for buildings from low-energy to passive house standard. Like the 76, it has a centre seal with three sealing levels and a glazing rebate 28 mm high. With matching hardware it reaches RC 2 burglar resistance. VEKA offers more than sixty colours and finishes, makes the profile in Germany and describes it as almost fully recyclable. If you are torn between the 76 and the 82, the difference lies mainly in insulation: Uf 1.0 against 1.1 and two more chambers in the outer frame. The window opens inwards: tilt and turn, side-hung, tilt-only or a door.
VEKA's deepest profile, for low-energy up to passive houses: 82 mm, 7 chambers and Uf 1.0 W/m²K.
New build. Suitable, and of the three Softline profiles the one that insulates best.
Renovation. Suitable. Do check that the 82 mm depth fits your existing wall opening.
VEKA Softline 76 MD. Same make and also a centre seal, but 6 mm shallower, with 5 chambers in the outer frame instead of 7. The Uf is 1.1 against 1.0 and the glass can be no more than 48 mm thick instead of 54 mm.
Schüco LivIng Vlak. The same 82 mm frame depth and the same Uf 1.0. On the LivIng Vlak the sash sits flush with the frame, and you see a little more profile: 120 mm against 114 mm.
Two fixed panes one above the other, divided by a transom: a narrow, tall window that only lets light through.
This window splits into two fixed panes: a small one at the top and a larger one below. Neither opens — it is the fixed window raised into a taller, narrower shape. That suits a stairwell, a hallway, or a strip of wall next to a door that already lets in enough air, where you're mainly after height and light rather than ventilation.
The standard size is 1,000 × 1,800 mm, with the top pane taking a quarter of the height and the lower pane the rest. If you do want to ventilate in exactly that spot, the fixed window with tilt-in top light — the same two-part window with a bottom-hung sash instead of the fixed top light — is the form that provides for it, without the look changing.
