Why this combination

Why a fixed window with top light in Kömmerling 76 MD?

Kömmerling 76 MD is a uPVC window system sold mainly in France and Belgium. The profile is 76 mm deep, has 6 chambers and closes with a centre seal: three sealing levels between outer frame and sash. The Uf is 1.0 W/m²K and it takes glass up to 50 mm. At 76 mm it is one of the shallower uPVC profiles we offer, with about 116 mm of frame and sash in view. The window opens inwards: tilt and turn, side-hung, tilt-only or a door, but no window that opens outwards, whether top-hung or bottom-hung.

Kömmerling's uPVC window: 76 mm, 6 chambers and Uf 1.0 W/m²K.

New build. Suitable. If you want the lowest Uf, also look at the Gealan S 9000 MD or the Rehau Synego.

Renovation. Suitable, especially where depth is short: at 76 mm the frame sits less far into the wall. Bear in mind that all the windows open inwards.

Rehau Synego. Also a centre seal, and 4 mm deeper: 80 mm. In view there is hardly anything between them, 117 mm against 116 mm, and the glass goes up to 51 mm against 50 mm. The Synego insulates slightly better: Uf 0.94 against 1.0.

Gealan S 9000 MD. The German S 9000 with a centre seal: 82.5 mm deep, so 6.5 mm deeper, and 3 mm wider in view, 119 mm against 116 mm. In return you get a lower Uf, 0.89 against 1.0, and glass up to 52 mm.

Two fixed panes one above the other, divided by a transom: a narrow, tall window that only lets light through.

This window splits into two fixed panes: a small one at the top and a larger one below. Neither opens — it is the fixed window raised into a taller, narrower shape. That suits a stairwell, a hallway, or a strip of wall next to a door that already lets in enough air, where you're mainly after height and light rather than ventilation.

The standard size is 1,000 × 1,800 mm, with the top pane taking a quarter of the height and the lower pane the rest. If you do want to ventilate in exactly that spot, the fixed window with tilt-in top light — the same two-part window with a bottom-hung sash instead of the fixed top light — is the form that provides for it, without the look changing.
