Aluminium bifold doors

On an aluminium bifold door every hinge carries the weight of the leaf next to it, and that is exactly where aluminium sets itself apart from uPVC.

Made to measure in uPVC or aluminium, in any RAL colour. Delivery to the UK is quoted with your offer.

Profiles

Profiles that can do this

Uf, frame depth and sightline come from the profile table. The corner section is the manufacturer's render of exactly this profile: for Aluprof always the same shot — closed corner, close up — and for Gealan the render of the S 9000 NL family. The maximum sash width is on every profile page.

Why aluminium for bifold doors

A bifold door doesn't hang on one hinge point but on a whole row: with eight leaves that's seven hinges, each carrying the weight of the leaf beside it as soon as the stack moves. For the Aluprof MB-86 Fold Line HD the manufacturer gives a leaf weight of at most 120 kg — that weight on a narrow hinge point is why we carry this system only in aluminium and not in uPVC: aluminium deforms less under its own weight than uPVC does over a leaf 3,000 mm tall.

Colour: powder-coated in any RAL colour

On aluminium the colour isn't in a foil but in a powder coating baked onto the profile. That means any RAL colour, smooth or textured — and on a bifold door, which you often see from both sides (from the garden and from the room), you can have a different colour inside and out. It's the same property that already applies to our other aluminium profiles (MB-79N, MB-86N, MB-Ferroline).

Leaf weight and number of leaves

Sizing a bifold door works differently from a window: you count in leaves, not in square metres. For the Fold Line HD that's 700 to 1,200 mm wide per leaf, up to 3,000 mm tall, and up to eight leaves together — so a run of just over nine metres. How many leaves are practical depends on the folding direction and on the space the stack of folded leaves takes up; the configurator shows that for each layout.

Fold Line HD or ConceptFolding 77?

We carry two aluminium bifold systems, and they have more in common than not: the Aluprof MB-86 Fold Line HD and the Reynaers ConceptFolding 77 both carry leaves up to 1,200 mm wide and up to 120 kg, and both go to a run of several metres. The difference is in the details you see on the cross-sections: the CF 77 has a low threshold of 25 mm and a 42 mm head track the doors hang from, and Reynaers gives a four-leaf door of 4,000 by 2,700 mm. The Fold Line HD goes further in the number of leaves — up to eight — and so is the choice for the widest openings. For both, the configurator tells you what's possible at your size.

Aluminium folding doors

Aluminium folding doors are the same as aluminium bifold doors: panels hinged together that fold to one side. We only supply them in aluminium.

Aluminium bifold doors with a traffic door

The 3-panel bifold door has a traffic door: one panel opens like an ordinary door, the other two fold away. You use the traffic door every day and fold the whole wall open in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about aluminium bifold doors

Which aluminium bifold door systems do you carry?

Two: the Aluprof MB-86 Fold Line HD, up to eight leaves, and the Reynaers ConceptFolding 77, with a low 25 mm threshold. Each has its own page with cross-sections, sizes and the comparison with the other.

How low can the threshold of a bifold door be?

On the ConceptFolding 77 the flat threshold is 25 mm high; the Fold Line HD has a low threshold of 13.5 mm, both read off the manufacturer's drawings. A threshold that's completely flush with the floor needs a drainage channel beneath it, and that's a decision for the building detail, not for the profile.

Why is there no uPVC bifold door?

Because we don't carry a uPVC bifold profile in our price source. The Aluprof MB-86 Fold Line HD is an aluminium system; the weight of a leaf — up to 120 kg — on a hinged point is one of the reasons bifold doors are usually made in aluminium or timber, and we don't carry timber.

How much does a leaf of an aluminium bifold door weigh?

According to the manufacturer, at most 120 kg per leaf, at a width of 700 to 1,200 mm and a height up to 3,000 mm. That weight rises with glass thickness and height, so with a tall, wide leaf in triple glazing, count on the upper limit.

Can an aluminium bifold door be any colour?

Yes, powder-coated in any RAL colour, smooth or textured, and different inside and out if you want.

Are aluminium bifold doors dearer than uPVC?

That's not a comparison we can make: there's no uPVC bifold profile in our price source to set it against. What you pay for the aluminium version is in your offer, once you've entered the size, the number of leaves and the glass in the configurator and sent the request.

Are aluminium folding sliding doors the same thing?

Yes: folding sliding doors, bifold doors and concertina doors are names for the same type. With us it's always aluminium.
